Summit Craters Etna

After dawn, it was obivous that this day welcomed us with clear blue sky and hopefully nice acitivity, so we planned to do a guided tour to the summit craters. Therefore we waited till 10 a.m. when the tours usually start at Refugio Sapienza. On this day unfortunately no guide was available. As I was well prepared with maps, GPS (altitude counter and compass) and info about the current eruption I decided to start a tour without guide till 2920 m (Torre del Filosopho) which is allowed. From there it should be possible to see the South East Crater (SEC) well and the hornito in 2800 m.
The picture shows the view from the end of the telferico which took us from 1940 m to 2500 m. From here we started to hike to the South East Crater. Notice: The west-side of Mt. Etna was already covered with ash!
