Description

The name of Zafferana derives from the Zaufanah Arab, that is yellow, for the great extensions of Ginestre and the cultivations of saffron. Its history laughed  to the XII century, when the first inhabited nucleus was formed around the Benedictine monastery. It succeeded to escape to the volcanic eruption of 1852, which gave life to the cascade of lava of the Jump of the Giumenta, and therefore to maintain its beautifuls urbanistic and architectonic system intact.

The Church mother

Consecrated to the Madonna of the Providence, the Church was reconstructed in 1817 after the earthquake of the same year had damaged the structure. In sicilian baroque style, the outside hits for the contrast provoked from the facade in withe stone and the black perron in lava stone.

To its inside, there are still today the greater part of the furnishings originates. Important Giuseppe Sciuti (1834-1911 probably turns out to be an elegant shovel of altar pertaining to the sicilian painter), representing Saint Giuseppe with the Child.

Natural resources

The territory of Zafferana is one of largest inside of the Park of the Etna, and it extends from Monte Ilice the Val Calanna, covered from lava of the eruption of 1992. Today it is a great attraction above all for the hikers who move between its landscape characterized from the lave that  have covered it many times over.

Typical Prodcts

Zafferana is most famous for its honey, that it occupies approximately 16% of the entire Italian production. Here many shepherds have become bee-keepers, becoming the promoter of a healthy and natural product.

Festivities and events

  • Madonna of the Providence female saint of the country, 1 August
  • Ottobrata, all the fine week of October. During this festival it is possible to taste the typical products of the place, as the honey, the wine and the mushrooms.
