Index: Description Its name has origin from the Benedictine monastery of the XII century. The country has ancient origins as testify the archaeological reperts recovered in the zone that attest the presence of sicilian, Greek, roman, bizantini, Arabs and normans. The actual city born in 1143, year in which the cout of Policastro entrusted the cenobio and the church dedicated to the Vergine Maria di Licodia to the Benedictines monacs. The monastery was elevated to abbey in 1205, it possessed a library where, in XIV the century, were written, in sicilian, “the Benedictine Constitutions”. With the institutional reform of 1816, and the birth of the Reign of the two Sicily, it lost its ancient monastery lordship obteining the administrative autonomy in 1840 with a decree of Ferdinand II.

The Church has endured various jobs of restoration that have changed it remarkablly. About the original construction it remains only the going back bell tower to the late Middle Ages, opened from elegant monofore. Inside, with remarkable artistic interest we find the valuable statues in wood pertaining to the sicilian school and putties that go back to the 1300's.
Fountain of the Cherub Going back to 1757, The fountain is characterized from many large mask mouths from which exits a very fresh water. The archaeological zones The Common of Saint Maria di Licodia is rich of archaeological zones: Pirciaria stone, with the town-walls traces building, Luppino, Hill of the Aquila, Mancuso, Mendorlito and civita Montalto. Recent diggings have carried to the light also a Greek village of VI century a.C. Natural resources Mail on the western slopes of the Etna, Saint Maria di Licodia is distinguished for its rich landscape of citrus groves that grow on a basaltic cliff land. Index Typical Products The more representative specialties of its gastronomy are the gravy prepared with potatoes and extracted of tomato, the wild "frittate" of verdura, the "zucche" fried, the soup of bread confirm with onion and oil of olive. Between typical cakes we have the “bersagliere”, the sweet mostaccioli prepare with grape or juice of "ficodindia". The handicraft is expressed in the jobs of ceramics and lava stone.
