Description

Of mediaval origin, Randazzo lies on a territory in which various civilizations have been met: Greeks, Roman, bizantini, Arabs, normans, Aragoneses. The origins of its name are still a mystery legacy to its foundation. As they testify numerous archaeological reports, the first presence of human takeovers already beginning from VI century a.c.

Until to sec. the XVI three languages were spoken: the Greek in the quarter of Saint Nicholas, the Latin in the quarter of Saint Maria and Lombardic in the quarter of Saint Martino, being itself the city formed from the union of three different ethnic groups; by the work of Lombardic it became one center of the Normans kings in fight against the Arabs. Randazzo has conserved nearly entire its medieval aspect being be always saved from the fury of the Etna.

Church of Saint Maria

The structure of the Basilica is the result of architectonic changes that go from XIII the century until 1863, year in which was rifared the Bell tower, until the restorations of our days. Although that, the various styles have been melted in harmonic way.

The outside, realized in black lava stone blocks, is characterized from the bell tower bichrome and two portals of 1400 sec., one of which with bassorilievi carved, merlate apses, and with to the top the coat of arms in marble of the country.

Going back to the XIII century, the Svevo castle in past was called “Mastio” because was a  fortification. In the anciently it was the room in which there were the prisoners after they have been tortured, today it has been realized the Museum of the Limbs Peasants.

The Pupi accommodates in this museum is all dressed in war dresses, and represents the famous cycle of the “chanson de geste” whose protagonists are Carl Magno and its knights.  The armors have been reconstructed around to years 1912 - 1925, from Emilio. Part of the Pupi, pertaining to the same collection, is found near the Palermo Museum of the Marionettes.

The museum conserve the archaeological collection  from the cavalier  Paul Vagliasindi by the half of the 800 sec., thanks to fortuitous discoveries in the feud of the same Vagliasindi, and, thanks to the diggings completed in the situated land in contrada S.Anastasia, that gave to the light other precious reperts.

Other diggings in the same zone completed from Salinas, director of the Archaeological Museum of Palermo, and subsequently from Paul Bears, director of the Bureau of the Sicily orient, showed that the land was occupied from one large "necropolis":infact were discovered thirty coffins said at "cappuccina", that were covered from large "tegoloni".

Typical Products

Between the native produce, we can taste optimal wines, oil of olive and the mushrooms of ferula. Optimal also the typical cheese products, like the annealed, “tuma”, the provole, the pecorino. Between the confectionery products, we can taste pastes of almond, the nuvolette, the zeppole and during the grape harvest the mostarda.

Festivities and events

15 of August : Celebration of  Madonna Assunta. She is the Patron of the countryI with San Giuseppe. During the eve of the celebration we have the procession of  the sleeping virgin, while the  following day a cart  parades, representing an allegory of the Mysteries of the Death, the Assumption, and the coronation of the Virgin. Many children take part to this celebrations, accompanied by the musical band and soldiers in uniform.
