Description

According to somebody, the name of the city derives from the Latin apud arum, traduced: to the feet of the altar and therefore to the feet of the Etna. About the ancient origins of this locality  remained very little, because of the disturbing natural events that many times over in the course of the centuries have cancelled the traces of the past. The Community is revived many times over, re-planned always on the same situated.

It was only  in 1817, thanks to the decree emanated from Naples by the king Ferdinand IV, that the independent common country became allowing the Community to emerge from the oblivion in which the great earthquake of 1693 made it results. The 1800's and the 1900's were above all characterize from a remarkable city and building development that has determined the loss of wide agricultural and forest areas and the consequent creation of new inhabited zones.

The palace of don Diego Pappalardo

It was constructed around the 1660 sec. and was rebuilt by Don Diego after the earthquake of 1693. Outside the balconies, the windows and the imposing can be still admired  the arc with lateral perrons. In the inner courtyard, to the center of an elegant up-elevation a great reservoir emerges that still introduces the typical elements in lava stone and wrought iron.

The portal of 1547

The arc in Romanesque style is constructed in lava stone and white stone, and supports a door of tables of chestnut tree from which 122 nail emerge, second the tradition, represent the number of the families that contributed to its realization. The portal constituted the main entrance of the first construction of the Church Mother. It did not endure important damages in occasion of the strongest earthquake of 1693, and it is for that we can admire it still in its materials originals.

The Church mother

The Cathedral of S. Caterina is the monument more important of Pedara, mainly for the contained artistic patrimony to its inside. It is defined like a splendid example of “black church” of the Etna for the presence of lava stone with which it has been constructed. Because of the earthquake of 1693 the hardly reconstructed church remained very little and the reconstruction work demanded beyond 10 years of job.

Inside can be admired some frescoes of Giovanni the Coco, a burlap of Mattia Preti who represents the Martyrdom of S. Caterina, the marbles policromi of the greater altar, some sculptures of the '700, the precious embroiders and the church furnishings. Outside, instead, they detach the bell tower with elements of various ages and a rare copy of meridian.
