Description The name of Nicolosi derives from the Benedictine abbey, dedicated to Saint Nicholas. Erected in the XII century, today is the center of the Etna Park's bureau and south point for Etna excursions. The first inhabited nucleus built a little community just around the monastery. This territory was destroyed by lava many times. The most important eruption was in 1669 that formed the so-called “Red Mounts ”, small cones of solid lava. Index Attractions: The Church mother Constructed in baroque style, this church was destroyed during the eruption of 1669 , it was reconstructed with the contributions of its same citizens. The outside was realized in nineteenth-century style with the exception of the evocative bell tower built in lava stone. Volcanological museum In the museum, visitors can see the exposure of minerals, lava, volcanic bombs and science videos. A collection of blowups, describes the various eruptions of the last twenty years. Moreover can be admired a plastic of the entire etnee territory in scale. It is one of the most important stations for sport-tourism like mountain bike and excursion on the Etna starting from Rifugio Sapienza. Index Natural resources Red mounts A time called “Mounts ruina”, these mounts take their name from the color of the earth: “Rina Russa” (red earth). They were formed with the eruption of 1669, when the volcano emitted a lot of volcanic sand. This eruption was much violent and disastrous, the lava destroyed many countries and finished its path in Catania, until the sea.
