Description

The modern Mascali is risen in proximity of the sea after the destruction in 1928. The name of Mascali appears in age bizantina, in an epistle that Pope Gregorio Magno sends in Year 593 d.C to the Bishop of Taormina, Supports. It is believed that the name of Mascali is referred to the Greek spoken from the Bizantini and would mean “ramoso”, and therefore wooded. In fact, its territory was ideal for the hunting to the eyes of the ancient sovereign of Sicily, above all those Aragoneses.

The Church mother

The Church Mother, with the classical shapes, introduces one navate inner structure uniform in three. Inside, between the other works, can be admired a 700 sec. statue in marble representative the city patron, Saint Leonardo.

The ruder of the tower

The construction, the sturdy and regular structure, had to serve protect the surrounding territory. With gothic and constructed taste on a square base, it was constituted from lavic stones tied with malta. The ancient tower was damaged remarkably from the sisma that deprived it of its advanced part. The walls of the fortress famous  tightened opening used from the soldiers in order to pull against the enemy, remaining protect. Natural resources

Reservoir natural oriented Foce of the Fiumefreddo river

Just to the ends of the Fiumefreddo river, is found a reservoir that is considered like one of the beautiful atmospheres of the Sicily. Contiguously, the great shoreline is found where there are the residual borders of the marsh “Gurna”, in which until to the past century the lake of Mascali extended, along the coast between Riposto and Fiumefreddo.

Between the typical products of Mascali, we can number the nut and apples “Delights of the Etna”.
