Description

The origin of Maniace seems to be tied to the foundation of a small inhabited to a Victoria brought back from the name of general bizantino in a battle against the Muslims of Sicily. In reality concrete tests do not exist that recall this historical event. It is known, instead, the foundation of a Benedictine abbey, Saint Maria di Maniace, in the year 1173-1174, intentional from Queen Margherita, mother of Guglielmo II the Bond.

The earthquake of 1693 damages the entire complex seriously and because of the reconstruction probably comes altered many of the existing building characteristics before the cataclysm. At last in the 1799 Ferdinand di Borbone  donates Saint Maria di Maniace and all its properties to English admiral Orazio Nelson. In this period go back inherent the more substantial changes the entire sacred complex.

The Castle

The Castle, of which only remain some rests, was realized around the thirteenth century. Iit must cross the suspended bridge levatoio on a full water ditch of sea. 

The English Cemetary

The small English cemetery, represents the simple with which this people used and uses to bury the extinct. In place of great mausoleum, a fine green carpet receives the prayers of the own beloved. To its inside you can find the rests of the Scottish poet William Sharp who wrote also with the pseudonym of Fiona Macleod. The cemetery is today of property of the family Nelson, has been given in concession to the Common of Maniace in November 2003.

Park of the Nebrodi

Become common independent in 1981, Maniace is the youngest common of the Park of the Nebrodi. Fertile valley is found in a point where flows three torrents: the Cutò, the Hammer and the Saracena, that come down from the Nebrodi mounts, in order to meet in the Simeto river.

Typical Prodcts

Maniace is known for its "tabacchiera peach". Draft of a peach much particular, from the crushed shape and the intense scent. Two varieties, that one with the paste white and that one to yellow paste, both characterized from the intensity of their scent, their sweet. The tabacchiera peach is used in table in the confectionery industry for the granite preparation of and freezes.

Festivities and events

  • S. Sebastiano, second Sunday of the May month. The party preview the procession of the statue of the Saint and the turns around Cross Celtic that is found in the courtyard of the Castle of Nelson. Such turns remember the feudalism regimen in the city.
