Description

The Linguaglossa's name derives from the ancient "Lingua grossa" (Big langue)  and it refers to a “large langue of lava”. Probably Linguaglossa was founded around the 1100 century by a group of genovesi (People from Genoa,Italy) craftsmen who practiced the resin extraction from the pines. Around the first inhabited center created by these craftsmen, grew an immense forest around Linguaglossa. Today is the north point for Etna excursions.   Index

Attractions:

The church mother
Built in 1613, the church is placed in the heart of the village center. The facade has 2 colors due to the mix of the lava stone with sand stone. The inside of the Church is rich of burlaps from the '800 century. The altar is full of sculptures.

The Convent of Cappuccini
Realized in the first half of the seventeenth century, the Convent of the Cappuccini is one of the beautiful constructions of the country. In its inside its possible to visit various art works. Index

Natural resources
The high part of the communal territory of Linguaglossa (approximately 2.000 hectares) is at the inside of the Etna's Park. There are lot of flora and fauna important zones. There is a great amount of  “Nordic” type vegetation. This type of plants, on the Etna, find their latest station in the south of italy. The most common species are the wild cat, the vixen, the donnola, the istrice, the martora, the lepre, the rabbit, and rapaces which the gheppio, the travelling hawk, the sparviero, the real Aquila.

The Caves
There are numerous caves in the territory of Linguaglossa, all formed by lava.  The most important ones are the Cave of the Palombe, the Cave of the Females, the Cave of the Raspberries, the Cave of Ices, the Cave of Aci.

Pine Ragabo
The pineta today has become the center for people who want to do scouting and long walks between its forests.

Museum of People of the Etna
The museum collects mainly objects and tools used in the past by ancient Etnean people. Here are rebuilt all the ancient environments disappeared.

Sunday: closed in the afternoon

Typical Products
Linguaglossa is known not only for its Stock sausages, but also for its eels flavored with tomato, onion, garlic and prezzemolo. Index

Festivities and events 

  • Sant' Egidio Abbot. 1° september. He is the Saint patron. This day is celebrated with folkloristic and cultural manifestations.
  • S.Rocco, 16 August. It is celebrated for the entire week. In this occasion there are a lot of traditional games, which the “race in the bags” and “scassata of the catùsi”.
  • The Festivity of the Boscaiolo, september.
