Description

Castiglione that is, Castel Leone, was called therefore for via of an ancient fortification that dominated it to the Alcantara river. It was lived from the Greeks already from the 403 a.C., which constructed on rocca a point of fortified sight in order to control which was the only one way of access for the inside of the Sicily. In the course of the centuries the city was dominated also from the Roman, the Arabs, the Normans and the Svevian, under which Castiglione became city direction, and Ruggero di Lauria, last feudatario.

The Castle of Lauria

Sure news is not had on the period in which the castle was built up, but probably is going back to the period norman-svevian.  The Castle of the Lion was called, name that gave to the place also the coat of arms: a castle and two lions. The castle in the Middle Ages, was connected to other outposts from underground passages, that they reached, is said, until the Cannizzo.

Several the quarters of the castle assumed various functions. There was the classified nobler part to the castellano, the scuderie, the barns, the stables, the rooms for the servants and the attache's to the maintenance, the prisons, the reserviors in order to conserve the piovana water, the Solecchia, than probably it was the mint in which the coins were coined. 

The Cannizzo

The tower, going back to the period that goes between the XII and XIV the century, was sure a lookout-post place. From that position it can be very seen, in fact, entire the high one goes of the Alcantara. Wider to the base it is high approximately six meters, with a beam of approximately three meters, constructed with local sandstone stone.

The fortress was found outside walls to them of town-walls of the city and was stormed from Federico II king of Sicily, when in 1301 it reconquered the feudo, removing it to Ruggiero di Lauria.

Basilica of madonna the Chain

Fluvial park of the Alcantara river

Castiglione of Sicily, therefore like Calatabiano, ago part of this protected park. In particular in the feature comprised between Castiglione of Sicily and Gaggi, the rivers of the Alcantara are characterized from one peculiar and more precious vegetation. Here it appears, in fact, the ripisilva to Platani, much rare in Sicily, placed side by side from other trees that live in humid places like the Salice white man, the smaller Elm tree and the black Alder.

Castiglione has been elect to center of the Regional Wine cellar for the Sicily Orients, in fact, the city is famous for its known wines all over the world: this is the earth of the nerello, the  cataratto one and the  carricante, wineyards native that are cultivated only here. For this its extraordinary wealth, Castiglione, are obligatory stage of the road of the wine of the Etna.
