Description

The city of Adrano  goes back around  400 a.C., when Dionisio The Old made  erect a castle near the ancient temple of the sicilian god “Adranos”, God of the war. It reached its maximum magnificence in the Norman period, when the big tower of the castle was constructed. In the XVI century urban planning was characterized by a great expansion due to an increment of the population, but it diminished drastically because of the epidemy of 1623 and the disastrous earthquake of 1693.

From the end of the XVI century, some families made a name for themselves in particular, the Ciancio, the Spitaleri and the Guzzardi for the control of the decisional power to the city level. With the borbonic administrative reforms of  1816-19 Adrano, still called Adernò, became an independent Common and it included Biancavilla too. The denomination of Adrano  was sanctioned, for decree of then the government in office, in 1929.

Castle of Adrano

The castle of Adrano, that is height about 34 meters, was founded by the count Ruggero in 1070, and was built up like outpost for the conquest of the Catania plain. It was inhabited until 1600, period during which collapse all the ceilings in wood left exposed unfortunately, to the inclemencies. Today, restored and center of the museum, it has become the most important attraction of the city.

The mother Church

The Mother Church, located close to the castle, has a norman origin. It was built up in various periods, and if the plan goes back  to the XVI  century, the dome goes back  to the XVIII century and the bell tower was constructed in the course of the XX  century.

Saracens' Bridge

It is famous for its antiquity. Its first structure in fact, was built in roman age and then improved and widened in the course of the XIV  century. Its architecture is characterized in particular way by four arches, two of which pointed. Moreover from here can be admired the lavic under cave of the Simeto river, and the Pineta and “the Intraleo cave ”.

The Intraleo cave

The Intraleo cove is situated near Monte Intraleo. It is a sliding tunnel  dipped in a very evocative landscape.  The cave can be visited, naturally with the aid of expert guides.

Typical Products

Typical of this locality  are the good mushroom of “ferla”, while among the first plates we can taste the Pasta with “caliceddi”, a particular vegetable, and the Risotto with  orange juice. Between cakes we must remember the cake with the Mandarin, and to conclude the wine of the Solicchiata.

Festivities and events

• Festival of the fruits products, March

• The festival of the oranges, February-March

• Adranita summer. During all the month of August there are teather representations, musical shows, artisan shows.

• Diavolata and Angelicata (Easter period). It is represented in the public square of the country a written religious drama written in 1752 from the poet Anselmo Laudani. The scenographies represent Hell and  Paradise.
• The Carnival of Adrano

The Carnival of Adrano, like that one of Acireale, is a festival of allegorical carts, musics, dances and songs. The paraded of the giovedì grasso is cheered by 19 thoudand lights that wrap an enormous poster that represents the Carnival itself.
