One of the most important aspect of Mediterranean diet is the quality of the ingredients used. Sicily, like many other areas of Italy, follows the seasons very closely. The result is that ingredients are fresh, often produced in Sicily and are tasty and  fragrant. To get the best out of our Sicilian recipes you should buy in-season ingredients where possible.

Here the most known foods and wine to taste during your Sicilian journey...

Seafood

Sicily is renowned for its seafood. Grilled swordfish is popular. Snapper is sometimes prepared in a vinegar and sugar sauce. Cuttlefish is served in its own black sauce with pasta. Another Sicilian seafood dish made with pasta is fennel with sardines.

Try seafood with  whites wines as Catarratto Bianco, Inzolia, Grillo, and Damaschino. These grapes make wine that is ideally suited for a cuisine that is heavy on seafood.

Meat dishes are always popular. Best known are veal marsala,  Chicken "alla marsala" can be prepared using a similar recipe and method. Veal spleen sandwiches are loaded with cholesterol, but delicious anyway.  Among red wines that suits well to meat there are the Nero d'Avola, Calabrese, Perricone, Frappato.

Sicilian cannoli

Sicilian desserts are wonderful. Cannoli are tubular crusts with  ricotta and sugar filling. Cassata is a sugary cake filled with the same delicious filling. Frutta di Martorana are almond marzipan pastries  shaped to resemble real fruit. Sicilian ice cream is excellent. Granita is sweetened crushed ice and flavored with lemons or strawberries. Another well known sweets are the almond pistachio cookies in Bronte, Catania

Some Tips to get better experience...

  • If sweets taste a little different from the ones you've had outside Italy, that's because the ricotta here is made from sheep's milk.
  • The best known desert and aperitif wines are : Marsala ,Moscato, Passito di Pantelleria, and Malvasia delle Lipari. Zibibbo, Liqueurs and Grappa, though not suitable for every occasion, go well with some desserts.
  • The wines have a maximum cost of about $20. A lot of wines from the Tuscany or Piedmont regions of Italy cost $40 or much, much more. Such is not the case for Sicily.
  • Drink wine with food not without food.
  • Only a little more than 2% of Sicilian wine carries the DOC designation. Sicily is home to over three dozen major and secondary grape varieties, with more white than red varieties.
  • "Denomination of origin" is a meaningless designation unrelated to quality. Often, the system is abused to "dignify" otherwise mediocre wines.
Discover now your next Sicily holidays. If you plan to go on a diet, go to Sicily first. You can always diet later!
