Discover the wonders of Sicily and its beaches

The coastal zone of the Sicily extends through beautiful white beaches and reefs deriving by the ancient eruptions of the Etna. For its warm climate, in respect to the rest of Italy, Sicily allows to go on the beach and swim in the sea all the year. But the best period is always that one from May to September. 
Here, there is a list of the most beautiful Sicilian beaches:
Mondello:  
Mondello
It is one of the most famous beach of Sicily. It's an ancient fishermen's village that (cause of the numerous restaurants, pizzerie and bar) accommodates many gastronomic events. Mondello is near Palermo, just 11,4 Km of distance, and it is reachable by the SS 113 (state road). Who visit Mondello cannot lose the ancient tonnara.

Under Taormina, there is an other beautiful beach: the small bay of Mazzarò, where it is possible to visit the "Blue Cave" (Grotta Azzurra). From there, you can also go to the Isola Bella, a protected marine area. In the north of Mazzarò the beaches there are Spisone and Mazzeo. It's possible to arrive in Mazzarò leaving from Taormina, through the cable - car, for a distance of approximately 5 km.

The western coast of Sicily, that one close of Trapani, is a lot important for the presence of the Zingaro Reserve. Here  
you can see the wonderful beach of Saint Vito lo Capo. This beach is famous for the presence of "tonnare" towers (Places where fishing the tunas) and the Saint Vito sanctuary. Saint Vito lo Capo is distant 40 km from Trapani. You can reach it by taking the provincial road 21 (Sp21), then the SS 113, the SP187 and finish the provincial road sp16. 
The Island of the Currents

In the south side of Sicily there is the Island of the Currents, similar to the African coast. It's the southest point of Europe (Consider that the city of Tunisi is at its North). It's a small rocks island  
with an extension of approximately 10.000 mq, connected to the land by a thin cliff strip. The island is characterized by the presence of some abandoned houses. It's the perfect locality for surf and the windsurf lovers.
The natural reserve of Vendicari in Syracuse

Between Noto and Pachino, there is the beautiful natural reserve of Vendicari, in the province of Syracuse. Here it is  
possible to assist to the turtles that deposit thier eggs and observe the migratory birds. Not to lose the visit to the  
baroque patrimony of Noto.
Along the oriental coast of Sicily there is the Playa beach of Catania, the Acicastello and Acitrezza reef and  
the gravelly shoreline of Fondachello.

The beaches of Ragusa:  
In ragusa there are in particular 4 sand beaches, with limpid waters. These beaches are near the city center and are little  crowded.
  • Marina di Ragusa
  • Marina di Modica, paradise for windsurfers  
  • Pozzallo, 30 km from Ragusa  
  • Sampieri, close to Scicli and Modica  
Capo D'Orlando

The coast of Messina, on the Tyrrhenian Sea, is characterized by reefs and capes like Saint Gregory and Capo D' Orlando,  with wonderful extended of sand where it is possible to see the Aeolian Islands and Tindari.
The best beach on the Aeolian island is Sabbie Nere in Vulcano. This is a complete black sand beach coming from the volcano activity. 
Cefalù
Cefalù
The sand beach of Cefalù extends for 1,5 Km approximately. It's characterized by limpid waters. Cefalù is 70 km from  
Palermo, taking the SS 113 in Messina direction and the freeway Messina - Palermo A20.  
Some beaches of Cefalù, are:
  • Salinelle, 7 km from Cefalù in Palermo direction, advised to who want to do windsurf.  
  • Capo Playa, 4 km from the Cefalù center.         
  • Mazzaforno/Ogliastrillo, 3 km from Cefalù.  
  • Caldura, 20 minute on foot from the historical center of Cefalù.  
  • S.Ambrogio, 6 km from Cefalù in Messina direction.  
  • Finale di Pollina, in Messina direction to approximately 12 km from the Cefalù center.
Summer vacations tips:
June and September are the best months for beach lovers, because they are less crowded. On the contrary, July and August, are very crowded with an high number of tourists. 
What to do when on a beach:  
There are free beaches that does not preview the ticket payment to enter. In many zones, there are paid beaches where the  price is from the 5 to 15 € (includes uses of cabins and deckchair). In the paid beaches there are many bars and restaurants but the prices, above all in the weekend, are higher. However, it's possible to eat in the restaurants  
or bars with "Tavola calda"(similar to fast food), that you can find easy in the vicinities. 
If you arrive by car in the parking close to the bathing zones there are the "Parcheggiatori". You can stay secure, they are honest persons who ask approximately 1-2 € to hold attention to your car. You recognize them by the black skin (cause the sun exposition). 
Other useful tips:  
  • Beach are equipped of Internal Security Service and "bagnini" (Baywatch) from the hours 8:00 to 18:30   
  • It's possible to rent of "pedalot" at the price of 15€ at hour  
  • The means like the windsurf, the water-scooter, and the boats cannot stay within 200 meters from the coast  
  • "Naturist" or "Topless" are not allowed on all the beaches. You need to find an area purposely dedicated  
  • It's important to have the number of the coastguard: 1530  
  • If there is a red flag on the river: This not allows bathing for bad conditions of weather  
Safety tipss: By the Harbour Master's Offices Coastguard.
  • After a long exposure on sunlight, enter gradually in water, before bathing the nape, the abdomen and the chest.  
  • Left to at least three hours from the last meal before taking a bath.  
  • Control the depth of the water.  
  • Avoid immersions or dives in waters that are not transparent, because there will be rocks or submerged obstacle.
