Top attractions to visit in Taormina during a tour of the city - A walking tour to Castelmola: 4 kilometers up to Taormina, there is a little village on a higher peak. This is Castelmola, reachable in an hour. If you don't like walking there is a bus service. Castelmola is built on top of a hill overlooking Taormina, the sea and the whole surrounding area.
- The most famous attraction: The Greek theatre. This is a Greek theatre rebuilt by the Romans in the 2nd century BC. The theatre is the second largest in Sicily (After that one of Syracuse). In the theatre there are always events and manifestation during all the year. You will watch terrific views of the village. To arrive there ask for in any store of Via del Corso.
- Grotta Azzurra: Near the Isola Bella and reachable by boat, Grotta azzurra is a cave with an exaordinary blue water and a salty smell presence.
- Isola Bella: Just under the coast of Taormina, Isola Bella is a natural marine reserve linked to the coast by a little thin sable line. Today on the island there is an ancient building used as museum.
- Mount Etna landscapes: A unique thing about Taormina is its great view towards the volcano Etna, the second most active volcano in the world. Tourist information to avoid risks - Avoid eating along the Corso Umberto. Go in the restaurants further down towards the bus station or elsewhere outside the center if you don't like crowded points.
- The town is full of tourist during the day...so consider to visit it in the morning or before the 19:00. The prices are very high...if you choose the High season (from June to September) Some restaurants could be expensive
- If you think to use the cable car, avoid to take it after 18:30h. This is the time everybody use it and so you will wait your time to get a lift up the hill. Expecting time can be to 30 minutes or so. Top
- By train you can reach it from Rome. You can chose a night express train.
- By airplane you can take a bus from Catania airport.
- If you go there with your own vehicle (ever if you find a Taormina car hire) you will have big problems finding somewhere to park it. If you need to go there by car park it in the big parking (called "Parcheggio Lumbi") shortly after the motorway exit. In the parking there is a shuttle bus up to the village. Top
Shopping around Corso Umberto... Corso Umberto is the main street in Taormina. There is a store every 3 meters. Are available all kind of products. You can purchase almond wine. There are only two places in Sicily where buy Almond Wine. One of this is Castelmola just above Taormina. Antiques and pottery are the most common items you will find for sale in the streets. Top Restaurants...Taormina is full of good restaurants. You can eat a great choice of different food and wines (Pasta, pizza, spaghetti, sweets, home wines, etc...). The service is friendly and pretty quick. The best place is the main street Corso Umberto. In Taormina the menu cards are available in italian and normally english and german. On the menu card you will always find a price called "coperto", used to pay for the cover and the bread you get on the table. One other great thing of Italian food is the Ice Cream and Granita.
