The Oasis of the Simeto river was born the 28 November of 1975 like oasis of faunistic protection. Its territory is localized along the sides of the Simeto river and is extended for 768 hectares. The oasis in past was a swampy zone, today there are many beautifuls zones that are escaped to the invasion of man. Some of these zones are Gornalunga Lake, formed from an affluent of the Simeto and that persists also in summer, the Salatelle, some great swamp, the New Foce, retailed after the alluvium of 1951, the Old Foce, fed from the channels throws it.

 

There are many and interesting animals that live inside of this oasis, between which many migratory birds, which the airone, the pittima, the chiurlo, the fischione, the sea pie. Then there is “the Emys orbicularis”, that is a sweet water turtle that by now is found very rarely in others country over the Italy, the “Poliphylla Ragusai”, a rare coleopter, vixens and donnole. For how much concerns the flora, the beaches are populate from perfuming giglio of sea, the “Pancratium Maritimum”, and near the Salatelle there are plants that grow normally in rich lands, like the Salicornietum fruticosae” and the Arthrocneum fruticosum”. After a sea storm, along the foce of the Simeto it is also possible to find of the amber. This last one is a lot searched and is considered one of the  most valuable stone in the world.
