The eruption of 2004

The eruptions are the most frequent phenomenon on the Etna that has been recorded since the antiquity.

Here an historical list of the most important eruptions:

  • Eruption of 1669: This was preceded by local earthquakes, and  the 11 March was opened a gash extended from Nicolosi to the central craters. In the inferior part were opened various explosive mouths whose materials gave life to various hills. The most known are the so called "Red mounts". The lava flows were very fluid and arrive to  Catania, destroying it partially.
  • Eruption of 1928: It was the most violent eruption of the first half of the century. Such eruption reached Màscali, destroying it.
  • Eruption of 1971: This eruption can be subdivided in two parts.
  1. In the first phase the lava arrived from four cracks to the base of the south east of the central craters. The lava goes to the Bove valley and towards the Montagnola. Lava destroyed the old Astronomical Observatory and good part of the old cable cars.
  2. During the second phase were opened many fissures inside of the Bove valley. There were lower cracks that made more damages threatening S.Alfio and Fornazzo, causing a wide destruction. Was formed a new crater called the south-east.
  • Eruption of 1998: The magma started from a fracture of the south-east crater and created small dense taps. During the August of the same year the Etna alternated violent outbreaks accompanied by small earthquakes and violent roars. The small taps were arrested however after some hundreds of meters because of their density and temperature. From another fracture of the south east crater, the lava went into the Bove valley to quote 2600 meters.
  • Eruption of 2001 : On 26 October, 25 earth tremors localized to the east of the central craters, preannounced this new eruption. There were lava fountains in the south side of the craters.
  • Eruption of 2002 : There were new fractures in the north and south side preceded by several sismic jolt and an intense strombolian activity.
