The eruption of mount etna of 2006

Etna eruption in news: the effusive eruption started on the 10th of September. Since the end of the lava emission on 15 December 2006, Etna continues to be rather quiet.

The mount etna recent eruptions 2006 start on 14 July with a fissure opened on the east flank of the South-East Crater  summit cone of Mt. Etna. Two vents along the fissure  produced a lava flow spreading east to the Valle del Bove. Moderate strombolian volcano etna eruption from a third upper vent, produced a little ash fallout on Catania during the opening phase of the eruptive fissure.

The lava flow field emplacement reached a peak on 20 July, when the lava flow  reached a maximum distance of about 3 km within the Valle del Bove. The lava  front widened at least 15 km distance from the closest villages. This Etna  eruption finished on 24 July.

As on 26 July, strong explosions were heard from the rim of the North-East Crater, and lapilli fell on the crater rim. Strombolian eruptions, which had resumed in late August 2006, continued into September reaching over 1 km in length by mid-September.

Lava erupted in the South East central Crater (SEC) and soon filled the depression and then went on . After the end of the short mt etna eruption phase of 14-24 July 2006, on 31 August strombolian activity resumed at SEC’s summit. This activity was mild, with fallout of lapilli and bombs mainly within the crater.

The overflow from the SEC’s central crater that began on 5 September continued to spread within the depression on 7 September. It overflowed the SEC’s eastern rim and started to spread and from there towards the Valle del Bove rim. The flow was extremely viscous, slow, thin, and cold .

The failure of the SEC’s upper wall took place on 10 September, due to the pressure of magma accumulating within the summit crater. After that Strombolian emissions continued at the SEC . Both lava flow effusions and explosive–strombolian activity continued until 27 September, when eventually both stopped, following a sudden decrease in volcanic tremor.

The next episode started on the late afternoon of 3 October with Strombolian explosions from the SEC summit, which increased in vigor during the following hours, and lava began to spill down the SE side of the SEC cone adjacent to flows of the previous two episodes.

A third eruptive episode occurred on 10 October, with vigorous Strombolian activity and lava again descending the SE flank of the SEC cone. A sharp decrease in tremor amplitude on the afternoon of 11 October indicated the imminent cessation of eruptive activity.

the SEC produced another powerful eruptive episode starting at  on 20 October, as indicated by a rapid increase in tremor amplitude. Vigorous Strombolian activity occurred from a vent located in the central portion of the SEC summit. A new pyroclastic cone rapidly grew at the summit of the SEC.

Episodic eruptive activity continued at the Southeast Crater of Etna (SEC) through late November 2006, involving a number of explosive and effusive vents. At the same time, constant lava effusion continued contributing to the growth of a complex lava field .

Episodic mount etna erupting activity continued at the South-East Crater of Etna (SEC) until December 2006, involving a number of explosive and effusive vents on and around the SEC cone. Explosive activity temporarily stopped on 7 December, but resumed four days later, up to the end of lava emission on 15 December 2006.
